The publication contains a huge study regarding their symbolism, typologies, chronology and decorative techniques that were used in production. The topics discussed are richly exemplified by over 300 highest quality illustrations which detail objects coming among from Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Austrian, German, Danish and Swedish collections. The monograph embraces some 150 objects associated with the history of the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. In 2006 Museum of King Jan III Sobieski Palace in Wilanow (Warsaw, Poland) organized a huge exhibition presenting ceremonial maces from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The exhibition report still can be found HERE. Authors, with Jacek Gutowski as the main curator, managed to collect the most representative and important examples of Polish and European bulawa's and buzdygan's maces, as they are called in Poland. Exhibits gathered from museums and private collections, for the first time in such a number in one place, helped in coming to new conclusions regarding their origins, and historical development. Despite good reviews and success of the Wilanow exhibition no catalogue was printed until now. Gutowski's book on maces is strictly connected with the 2006 exhibition, and is based on the same selection of objects, presenting new approach to the history and genealogy of Polish, mid-European and Oriental maces used in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The lecture is complemented by selection of other objects: paintings, swords, cartridge-pouches etc. which, in various ways, were connected with production of ceremonial maces. This is the first and the only known book on ceremonial maces, based both on iconographical sources and preserved objects from various collections. As such it can be considered as a breakthrough and a milestone, completing our knowledge on these decorative arms in Europe. The previous one was printed under different title in black cover: The Author, Wojciech Zablocki, was few times olympic medalist and a world champion in fencing. The book contains descriptions of 155 different sabres from Polish and European Museums and private collections. Each sabre is sketched with lot of details and measurements which will please even the most inquiring arms lover. Description, albeit in Polish, gives very detailed information on construction, blade profile and the fight usefulness of the sabre. In few words, every weapon is technically reviewed by the fencing master. This is very rare point of view, while most of the scholars are focusing on art and construction without getting involved in real value of the sabres as weapons. - [Polish Military Uniform by Zdzislaw Zygulski](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/uniforms-military-badges-decorations/polish-military-uniform-by-zdzislaw-zygulski/) - "Polski Mundur Wojskowy" [Polish Military Uniform] by Zdzisław Żygulski jun. & Henryk Wielecki Krakow 1988 Another great and spectacular book by one of the greatest scholars of old arms, prof. In American antique bookstores prices of this book are reaching 200$ ! - [100 Rarities from the Military Collection at the National Museum in Krakow](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/edged-weapons-armours/100-rarities-from-the-military-collection-at-the-national-museum-in-krakow/) - 100 Rarities from the Military Collection at the National Museum in Krakow by Michal Dziewulski Kraków 2015 The National Museum in Krakow holds one of the largest, interesting and historically important collection of old arms and uniforms in Poland. But until now there was no publication that could prove its importance, despite the roots of the collection are set back in the 19th century. This beautiful album should change it because for the first time it shows the beauty of this largely unknown collection. The publication excels on many levels. Firstly, it is well written history of arms, armour and uniforms, which is divided into three sections: 1. Polish Arms, 2. European Arms, 3. Oriental Arms. The story written by the author discovers many facts and nuances concerning antique weapons used in Poland including the fascinating history of the objects that found their way to the National Museum collection. Those who are not familiar with arms and armour history will consider this book as revealing and insightful. But the album will offer a lot also to those who are acquainted with old weapons. Author puts a lot of existing statements under question, giving the possibility of intellectual discourse with the reader. Also, detailed catalogue information for the presented objects and the catalogue of marks and inscriptions, which are necessary for every serious arms study, makes this publication a high standard scientific venture. What makes this book even more outstanding are high quality, artistic pictures, which are the core of this publication and makes it one of the most beautiful books on arms printed during last years in Poland. The great diversity of objects makes this book even more interesting: sabres, horse tacks, uniforms, firearms, decorations and badges, polearms - since the medieval times until early 20th century. Broad spectrum of objects for different specialities and hobbies. The title "100 rarities" might be a little misleading. In fact the reader will find almost 200 objects illustrated and catalogued in the publication, but described in 100 "chapters". Also not every object deserved to be called "a rarity", but each of them was carefully chosen to build up the story ongoing since number 1 to 100. The above statement is fully justified, as this book is amazing on many levels. In fact, it has one and only drawback - it is heavy and expensive. But, to be honest, arms and armour lovers should like this feature very much, as while browsing this book one will hope it won't end too soon. But it has "only" over 400 pages and 333 stunning photographs. What is most important - THE BOOK IS IN ENGLISH, POLISH AND UKRAINIAN! And is about famous "winged horsemen" - the hussars. But what is this book about? It is first volume of the catalogue of Polish historical objects on Ukraine. This one is dedicated to Polish hussars armours that were part of the huge collection of arms and art in Pidhirtsi (Podhorce) castle, built for hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski in 1635-1640. During the second world war the collection was dispersed and looted, some of the art objects are now found in Polish and Ukrainian museums, some of them were never found again. Both authors, after world-wide query published all the hussars armour from the collection that were found on Ukraine. But the way they executed this publication is amazing and adorable in every inch - starting from the preface, the history of the collection, history of hussars armours, photographs and details. DETAILS are, in my opinion, the most valuable part of this book. Every armour was depicted minutely. They show exactly everything what collectors and arms lovers are looking for - inside, outside, closeups, details.... At the end of the book one can find precisely executed measurements and blacksmith marks! - [Szabla żołnierza polskiego / Sabre of Polish Soldier](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/edged-weapons-armours/szabla-zolnierza-polskiego-sabre-of-polish-soldier/) - "Szabla żołnierza polskiego XIX i XX wiek" [Sabre of Polish Soldier, 19th and 20th centuries, from the collection of Polish Army Museum ] by Aleksander Czerwiński and Lesław Dudek Wrocław 1988 Fundamental catalogue of the Polish sabres dated from the end of the 18th century to the late 70’s of the 20th century, including all edged weapons which were in use by Polish soldiers: Polish, Prussian, German, Austrian, Hungarian and Russian sabres! Czyżewski Kraków 2013 SOLD OUT Pole Weapons - halberds, pikes, spontoons, partisans, lances, berdisches - belongs to this section of antique arms that are usually neglected by scholars and museum catalogues. Only the most prominent examples are the subject of closer examination. That is the reason why still so many of the number of pole arms are quite enigmatic for the collectors and museum curators. Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow is in posession of quite large number of pole weapons. The collection was solicitously rebuilt through the years after II WW. The original collection was in large extent stolen, destroyed or missing since 1795 when the Royal Castle was taken first by Prussian soldiers and later became Austrian Army Garisson. This catalogue fills the important gap in our knowledge about those arms, so often used in the past. This huge book makes huge impression already at first sight: it is huge, thick, with nicely designed front cover. This impression doesn't go away after opening the book. Long, detailed descriptions and a lot of pictures: each weapon is taken on its both sides (!) and complemented with numerous pictures of stamps. The author's approach is very interesting. With the detailed descriptions he provides to the reader not only basic description but also the history of the object and, what seems to be most significant, many analogies to the similiar objects in other museum and auctions. For English reader the important information is the book is provided with full, 1:1 translation! Renewed in two editions, now became a very rare title! This is a serious work on medieval swords written by university scholar, with fresh and critical view on other significant works published in the world. Title is a little misleading, because the book discuss swords not only from Poland but also those found in Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Yugoslavia, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia! - [Winged Hussars / Husaria Rzeczypospolitej by Radosław Sikora](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/edged-weapons-armours/winged-hussars-husaria-rzeczypospolitej-by-radoslaw-sikora/) - Winged Hussars / Husaria Rzeczpospolitej by Radosław Sikora, Radosław Szleszyński Warszawa 2014 Radosław Sikora is an Author of dozen of books and articles dedicated to the famous cavalry, the Hussars called "Winged Horsemen" due to the custom of wearing wings on their back or at the saddle. The legend of this cavalry, which was active in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth since early 16th century until 1776, is still very strong in Poland. Their winning campaigns, including the famous 1683 rescue of Vienna from the Turkish siege are still a subject of many discussions, articles, books and museum exhibitions. It is fair to say that the legend of "winged" hussars is also known in other countries, where many arms and armour lovers are attracted by the unique character of this cavalry, which combined Eastern (Oriental) and European warfare features. Radosław Sikora decided to throw a new challenge for himself and other scholars by focus on the image of the hussars. Iconography: paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints are always important part of arms and armour study, if you know how to interpret them. But you can't ignore them. Knowing iconography is as much vital for scholars and students as real, museum objects, literature and writing sources. Without them our vision and knowledge about the use of arms would be far from complete. The book is an outstanding album which main part is dedicated to imagery of Polish-Lithuanian Hussars through almost 300 years. Some of the sources can be seen here for the first time in publication, some of them were already known but not always in high quality and in such a details like in the album by Radosław Sikora. The chronological arrangement contains about 100 artworks, mostly paintings and sculptures since 1514 to ca. 1786, of historical and documentary value. It is also fascinating travel through the history of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its unique culture, including sarmatism. The addition for the book is a set of writing sources for Husaria. The important thing is the books is translated into English and French, what will shed a little bit more light on hussars history also for scholars in other countries. The only flaw of the album is the lack of historical commentary, which could help to understand better the context of some of the images (both historically and artistically) and allow to distinguish for not set into readers between historical and historicizing works. Nevertheless there is no doubt that the book by Sikora and Szleszyński will be a milestone for the published iconography of Polish-Lithuanian hussars for the next few years and today it is highly important addition to every arms lover library. - [Pistols and revolvers by Jan Kruczek](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/firearms/pistols-and-revolvers-by-jan-kruczek/) - "Pistolety i rewolwery. [Uniforms of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army in the 18th century] by Jan Czop Rzeszów 2009 A very interesting and colorful book presenting the history of Polish and Lithuanian uniforms from the 18th century. The book is illustrated with pictures that are giving the impression of a time-line through the pages, what helps reader to understand the development of Polish military attire through the century and in all kinds of troops. The pictures seems to be childish and very general at the first sight, but at the closer look they appear to be a well-thought-out attempt and show as much details as necessary. A very nicely done book for those who are interested in the history of European uniforms. - [Cuda Orientu / Wonders of the Orient](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/oriental-arms-armour/cuda-orientu-wonders-of-the-orient/) - "Cuda Orientu" [Wonders of the Orient] Gdansk 2006 - [Hilts of Japanese swords](https://polisharms.com/bookstore/oriental-arms-armour/hilts-of-japanese-swords/) - "Jelce mieczy japońskich z kolekcji Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie" [Tsuba - hilts of the Japanese Swords from the collection of the National Museum in Warsawa] by Katarzyna Maleszko and Krzysztof Polak Warszawa 2005 Beautifully printed on coated paper, with hard cover and in handy format, the catalogue of Tsuba from the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw.
